Abraham Jefferson Seay, valiant Union Army Colonel and effective Republican Oklahoma Governor

Grand Old Partisan salutes Abraham Jefferson Seay, born November 28th 1832. Outbreak of civil war, the patriotic lawyer recruited the 32nd Missouri Volunteer Infantry. His regiment battled from Mississippi to North Carolina.
Peace restored, Colonel Seay settled in Oklahoma. Named district attorney by a Republican governor, he was later elected circuit judge. He also founded a bank.
Benjamin Harrison named him to the territorial supreme court. January 1892, the President appointed Seay territorial governor. This "able and effective governor" benefited public education and improved conditions for African-Americans. Later years, he prospered in business while lobbying for statehood.
