Eugene Meyer – Republican Publisher of the Washington Post
Grand Old Partisan honors Eugene Meyer, born October 31st 1875, descended from a long line of rabbis. Graduating from Yale, he soon prospered as an investment banker. He bought a failing Washington Post in 1933 and transformed it into a journalistic powerhouse. Editorials opposed the New Deal. His daughter Katharine Graham published the newspaper from 1959.
Though a Republican, Meyer was named by President Wilson head of the War Finance Corporation during WWI. President Coolidge appointed him chairman of the Federal Farm Loan Board, and President Hoover made him chairman of the Federal Reserve. President Truman chose him to be the World Bank’s first president.
