Grand Old Partisan honors Florence Prag Kahn, born November 9th 1866. She attended a San Francisco high school and the University of California, Berkeley. Her career began teaching English and history.
March 1899, Florence married Julius Kahn, a Republican Congressman. She worked as his aide and wrote newspaper articles. February 1925, this "brilliant and skillful" woman won a special election after he died during a twelfth term. There followed five re-elections.
Kahn was the first female member of the House Military Affairs Committee. Also on the Appropriations Committee, she backed construction of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge. The presidencies of Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover received her enthusiastic support. Activities in later years included the American Association of University Women and the Council of Jewish Women.
