Gregory Smith – Vermont Republican Governor during the Civil War
Grand Old Partisan honors Gregory Smith, born in Vermont, July 22nd 1818. Prospering with banking and railroads followed law studies at Yale. He served in both legislative chambers, rising to be speaker of the house.
In 1862, Smith was elected governor. He fully backed the Union war effort. Confederate raiders targeted his home in St. Albans.
Smith chaired the state delegation at three Republican National Conventions. He declined several opportunities to be a Senator. His father and brother were Congressmen; his son, Governor; his son-in-law, Lieutenant Governor. Brainerd, Minnesota was named for his father-in-law.
