Grand Old Partisan applauds Irene Dunne, born December 20th 1898. Her goal of becoming an opera singer gave way to acting as film roles came along. She starred in forty-two movies and received five Oscar nominations.
Dunne volunteered for charities during WWII. She was delegate at the GOP’s 1948 national convention. President Eisenhower named her delegate to the United Nations. She also campaigned for Thomas Dewey and Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. Walt Disney, a fellow Republican, invited her to preside at an opening-day ceremony for Disneyland.
In retirement, Dunne focused on the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, and a Catholic hospital.
