John Griggs, conscientious New Jersey Governor

Grand Old Partisan honors John Griggs, born in New Jersey, July 10th 1849. His career began as a railroad ticket agent, then lawyer. This young Republican won elections for both legislative chambers, rising to senate president. He was delegate at the GOP’s 1888 national convention.
In 1895, Garret Hobart, a future Vice President, managed his gubernatorial campaign. Griggs became the state’s first Republican Governor in nearly three decades. He protected the rights of Blacks as well as all employees.
In 1898, William McKinley named him Attorney General. Three years later, the President appointed Griggs to the international Permanent Court of Arbitration, serving until 1912. He also was general counsel for the Radio Corporation of America, parent corporation of NBC.
Griggs is remembered for being "one of the most forceful and influential figures in the state’s history".
