Kentucky Governor Simeon Willis – "more than honest, he was honorable"
Grand Old Partisan honors Simeon Willis, born December 1st 1879. Public service began with four years as solictor for Ashland, Kentucky. In 1927, a Republican governor named him an appellate court judge.
Impressed by his integrity, the state GOP nominated him for governor. Willis overcame a divided Democratic Party, taking office December 1943. He named a Black person to the highest government position in the South at the time, assistant state’s attorney, as well as the first Black person on the board of education. His administration upgraded schools and state parks and left a budget surplus.
