Nathan Dixon voted for the GOP's 13th Amendment, ending slavery
Grand Old Partisan honors Nathan Dixon, born in Rhode Island, May 1st 1812. His father and son were Senators. He studied law at Harvard and Yale, then focused on banking.
Entry to politics was the state house. Dixon cast an electoral vote for the 1844 Whig presidential nominee and later won a congressional term. In 1862, he won first of four more terms. This stalwart Republican fully backed the Union war effort. Receiving his vote were the Freedmen's Bureau; the 1866 Civil Rights Act; the 13th, 14th, 15th Amendments; and the (anti-) Ku Klux Klan Act.
