Grand Old Partisan honors Portus Baxter, born December 4th 1806. After graduation from the University of Vermont, he achieved success as a merchant along with his business partner, a future Republican Senator. He campaigned for Whig candidates and then cast an electoral vote for the GOP’s first presidential nominee.
In 1860, Baxter won the first of three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. He firmly supported the Lincoln administration. Personally tending to countless war wounded garnered him a nickname, "the Soldier’s Friend." Receiving his vote were the 1866 Civil Rights Act and the 13th and 14th Amendments.
