the original Shermanesque refusal
Grand Old Partisan spotlights an American political classic. At the 1884 Republican National Convention, there arose a notion to nominate William Tecumseh Sherman for president. June 5th, this heroic general responded by telegram to the party chairman:
"If nominated I will not accept. If drafted I will not run. If elected I will not serve."
In modern times his statement is remembered as: "If nominated I will not run. If elected I will not serve."
A dismissal so absolute of political aspirations has been termed "Shermanesque" ever since.
