Thomas Fitch – New York, Illinois, Wisconsin, California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona Republican
Grand Old Partisan honors Thomas Fitch, born January 27th 1838. Ambition led him from New York City to Chicago to Milwaukee to San Francisco. He edited a Republican newspaper and served in the state house.
This restless attorney next edited a newspaper in Nevada, was delegate at its statehood convention and campaigned to re-elect President Lincoln. Mark Twain credited him for improving his writing. In 1868, he won a congressional term. The (anti-) Ku Klux Klan Act received his vote. Moving on, Fitch helped with an early attempt for Utah statehood. Following this, he served in the Arizona territorial legislature.
In 1881, Fitch successfully defended Wyatt, Virgil and Morgan Earp against murder charges after the Shootout at the O.K. Corral. Later years found him back in New York, via Minnesota. Further sojourns were to southern states, Europe and Hawaii. Death came while he was writing for the Los Angeles Times.
