William Madison McDonald – born to ex-slaves, the first Black millionaire in Texas
Grand Old Partisan honors William Madison McDonald, born near Dallas, June 22nd 1866. His parents had been slaves. He worked for a lawyer, then attended college in Tennessee. then was a high school principal. Throughout the years, he participated with several fraternal organizations. Business savvy in cotton milling, publishing, banking and insurance made him the first Black millionaire in Texas.
McDonald organized his county GOP and served on the state committee. He registered many thousands of Blacks to vote. In 1896, the Texas Republican Party elected him Chairman. His bi-racial coalition bore the name Black and Tans. Unfortunately, he later strayed toward Democrats before returning to support Thomas Dewey for president.
