Grand Old Partisan spotlights the nation’s first female lawyer. Graduating from Iowa Wesleyan University, Arabella Mansfield studied law at a local firm. She sought to take the bar exam, though legally it could be taken by "white male persons." June 15th 1869, a Republican judge, Francis Springer, cited precedent in ruling that this wording did not mean women could not also take the exam. Impressed by Mansfield’s abilities, he certified her to practice law. Several months later, President Grant appointed him federal tax collector for the state. Following year, the GOP-controlled legislature enacted that "Women and Colored Persons May Be Attorneys at Law."
